Presidential Hopeful Visits Harmon
Kansas Senator and Presidential hopeful Sam Brownback made an impromptu visit to J. C. Harmon high school on August 28, 2007. Senator Brownback met with the senior class in the Harmon auditorium and conducted an informal town-hall-styled meeting. He also fielded questions from different seniors concerning his stance on issues such as immigration law, global warming, abortion, and same-sex marriage.
Mr. Phil Webb, Harmon Social Studies teacher emceed the event and was assisted by Kiante Harris and Toni Taylor in welcoming Senator Brownback to Harmon. In Mr. Webb’s introduction he reflected how back when he was in high school 16 years earlier, another Presidential hopeful visited his school. This Presidential hopeful eventually became two-term President Bill Clinton.
Senator Brownback started his speech off by telling the attentive Harmon seniors that “ I believe you
(Harmon Seniors) can do anything if you put your minds to it!” Brownback later said, “You can lay around and take it easy and do nothing. This is a free country! On the other hand, if you want to change the world, well you can do that too! If any ten of you Harmon Seniors were to get together on something, you could change Kansas City!”
Seniors then had the chance to ask the Senator questions which they had submitted in their respective social studies class earlier in the week. Among the questioners were seniors Alex Florez, Carlos Valdovido, Rachel Walters, Samuel Standish, Charles Humphries, Kiara Butler, and Toni Taylor.
The Senator did an impressive job of answering questions and expressing his viewpoints. In addition he gave Harmon high school seniors an unprecedented first-hand experience in the American democratic system. In addition, the senior class behaved perfectly and made the entire Harmon community proud.
